Cuba Strengthens Alliance with Russia Amid US Sanctions

Cuba has reaffirmed the importance of its historical and strategic relations with Russia, highlighting the support received amid sanctions imposed by the United States.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla expressed gratitude for the recent shipment of Russian oil aimed at alleviating the energy crisis faced by the island.

In a message posted on the platform X, Rodríguez reported a courtesy meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, who leads inter-ministerial consultations in Havana. On the occasion, the Cuban foreign minister sent greetings to Russian Minister Sergey Lavrov, whom he referred to as a “dear friend”.

The energy sanctions imposed by the United States, which intensified from December 2024, have exacerbated supply difficulties in Cuba, resulting in frequent power outages and direct impacts on the population’s daily life.

In response, Russia has committed to sending a second oil-laden ship to mitigate the effects of these restrictions. This assistance reinforces the ties between Havana and Moscow, which maintain a long-standing partnership in various areas, including energy and trade.

According to the portal RT, the shipment of Russian fuel is part of an ongoing effort to support Cuba in the face of external pressures.

Al Jazeera also reported that cooperation between the two countries encompasses economic and diplomatic agreements, with frequent meetings between high-level officials. During the meeting in Havana, Rodríguez and Ryabkov discussed ways to deepen bilateral collaboration.

The energy crisis in Cuba is not an isolated phenomenon but reflects a history of tensions with the United States, which has maintained trade and financial restrictions against the island since the 1960s.

The Cuban government has denounced these measures as an obstacle to national development, while Washington justifies the sanctions as a response to Havana’s internal policies. In this context, the partnership with Russia emerges as an alternative to diversify sources of support and reduce dependence on Western markets.

Analysts point out that the relationship between Cuba and Russia also carries symbolic weight on the international stage, especially at a time of increasing geopolitical polarization.

As the United States intensifies sanctions against both countries, Havana and Moscow seek to strengthen their position through alliances that challenge the isolation policies imposed by the American government. Besides oil, Russia has provided assistance in sectors such as infrastructure and technology, with projects established in recent years.

The meeting between Rodríguez and Ryabkov in Havana also served to reaffirm the mutual commitment to face external pressures. In addition to the energy crisis, both sides emphasized the need to expand cooperation in international forums, defending common interests in issues such as sovereignty and self-determination.
