MEC Sets Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence Use in Basic Education

The Ministry of Education (MEC) has released a document outlining guidelines for integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into basic education, aiming to guide educational networks on curricular and ethical practices for using this technology in schools.

The announcement was made during the webinar ‘AI in Basic Education: Pathways for Curriculum and Teaching Practice,’ held on April 9, 2026, with the broadcast available on MEC’s official YouTube channel.

During the event, the course ‘AI in Teaching Practice: Ethical, Creative, and Pedagogical Use’ was also introduced, targeting high school teachers and available on the Mais Professores Platform.

According to the portal educador.brasilescola.uol.com.br, the project is supported by UNESCO and gathered public managers and experts from institutions such as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the University of São Paulo (USP), who contributed to the debate on AI implementation in the school environment.

Kátia Schweickardt, Secretary of Basic Education at MEC, emphasized the importance of incorporating AI into educational routines, advocating for continuous support to schools and teachers for effective and responsible technology use.

Anita Stefani, Director of Educational Management Support at MEC, highlighted that investments in infrastructure and teacher training are essential to align AI adoption with data protection laws and the rights of children and adolescents, ensuring its application is safe and beneficial.

The document prepared by MEC addresses issues such as creating curricula focused on AI learning, structuring educational actions that incorporate technology, and organizing training programs for teachers.

The proposal aims to promote a dual approach, including both teaching about AI and using it as a pedagogical tool, encouraging the development of a digital and media culture in schools.

The text also seeks to ensure that educators are prepared to handle the ethical and technical challenges accompanying the introduction of intelligent systems in the learning environment.

This initiative arises in a global context of increasing digitalization, where AI has become a central tool in various sectors, including education. The ministry emphasizes that adopting this technology should be done critically, considering the particularities of the educational system and the needs of students and teachers.

The newly launched course on the Mais Professores Platform represents a practical step to empower teachers, offering modules that explore everything from AI fundamentals to its direct application in the classroom, focusing on creative and ethical methods.

Experts present at the webinar discussed the long-term impacts of AI in education, noting that the technology could transform how content is taught and assimilated.

MEC plans to monitor the implementation of the guidelines and adjust strategies based on the experiences of educational networks, ensuring that AI integration contributes to the quality of basic education.
