São Paulo Teachers Stage Walkout on Thursday and Friday

The Union of Official Education Teachers of the State of São Paulo (Apeosp) has called for a teachers’ strike this Thursday and Friday, April 9 and 10. The group is demanding a salary adjustment, correct application of the national wage floor as a career base, professional appreciation, better working conditions, and changes in ongoing educational policies in the state.

The mobilization agenda also includes other points such as the withdrawal of PL 1316, which addresses the Administrative Reform of Education, and the revocation of the Performance Evaluation, deemed unfair by the union. Teachers are also calling for the opening of classes for regular education and Youth and Adult Education (EJA) during the evening, and inclusive Special Education that meets the needs of atypical and disabled students.

“The strike is the result of a decision made at the assembly on the 6th, when we also stopped. We are continuing the salary campaign, which also demands the return of the retirees’ confiscated funds, among other things. Additionally, there is PL 1316, which is yet another attack on education that we want withdrawn, as it involves evaluations that punish teachers, with the possibility of mandatory relocation,” stated the interim president of Apeoesp, Roberto Guido.

Another point highlighted by the union is the implementation of goal 17 of the National Education Plan (PNE), which aims to equalize the salaries of basic education teachers with other higher education professionals. The movement also questions the so-called “platformization of education,” which refers to the intensive integration of private company platforms in learning and classroom routines.

On Friday at 4 PM, an assembly will be held at the Free Span of MASP on Avenida Paulista to decide the direction of the strike.
