USP Students and Staff Escalate Strike with April 14 Walkout

The University of São Paulo (USP) is experiencing a significant mobilization among students and staff, with a general strike scheduled for April 14, 2026.

The movement gained momentum following a joint statement from 75 student organizations, released by the Central Directory of Students (DCE) on April 7, 2026, challenging a directive from the university’s Budget and Heritage Commission (COP). This directive bans the rental of spaces by academic centers and prohibits businesses and other activities organized by these centers, causing widespread dissatisfaction among students.

So far, students from eight courses have joined the strike, including Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Geosciences, Nursing, Psychology, International Relations, Law, and Biology.

According to the Metrópoles portal, over 40 assemblies have been convened to discuss the participation of other courses in the movement. In addition to the issue of academic center spaces, students are demanding improvements in university cafeterias, following reports of water supply failures and even the presence of larvae in the food served.

Simultaneously, technical and administrative staff at the Butantã campus are also mobilizing. On March 31, 2026, they held a strike demanding salary parity, the establishment of a minimum wage of R$ 1,200, the end of hour compensation during holidays and breaks, and access to the BUSP benefit for outsourced workers.

The USP Workers’ Union (Sintusp) has installed banners across the campus, and services such as the Central Cafeteria and the campus administration have been affected by the disruption.

A new staff assembly is scheduled for April 9, 2026, with a strike indication, which could further expand the planned walkout on April 14. The USP Rectorate, contacted by the Metrópoles portal, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the demands of students and staff.
