Brasília Court Orders Gustavo Gayer to Compensate Gleisi Hoffmann for Misogynistic Remarks

The Federal District Court has ordered federal deputy Gustavo Gayer from the Liberal Party of Goiás to pay compensation of 20,000 reais for misogynistic remarks directed at federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann from the Workers’ Party, who at the time of some of the incidents held the position of Minister of Institutional Relations.

The decision was made by the 6th Civil Chamber of the Federal District Court on April 8, 2026.

The case originated in March 2025, when Gayer posted a video on the platform X insinuating that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was offering the then-minister to congressional leaders in a manner akin to a pimp. In the same video, the deputy also suggested that Senate President Davi Alcolumbre form a throuple with Gleisi Hoffmann and her husband, deputy Lindbergh Farias.

In addition to the compensation, the ruling mandates that Gayer publish a retraction on his social media within ten days, subject to a daily fine of one thousand reais for non-compliance.

Judge Alfeu Machado, the case’s rapporteur, emphasized that public representation carries a significant symbolic and pedagogical function, especially in a high-visibility digital context involving public figures.

The appellate decision overturned the initial ruling, which had dismissed the compensation claim, marking a new understanding of the severity of the offenses committed.

Gleisi Hoffmann and Lindbergh Farias publicly commented on the verdict, highlighting that the ruling represents not only a personal victory but also a firm stance against misogyny and political violence.

Gustavo Gayer’s office was contacted for comment on the judicial decision on April 9, 2026, but has not responded as of yet.

According to the portal CartaCapital, the case underscores the importance of combating hate speech and practices that disrespect the dignity of public figures, especially in a political environment marked by polarization and personal attacks.

The impact of the decision extends beyond the specific case, bringing to light debates about the limits of freedom of expression and the responsibility of parliamentarians in using digital platforms.

Gayer’s statements, made in a context of wide circulation on social media, were widely criticized by human rights organizations and feminist movements, which pointed out the discriminatory and degrading nature of the content.

The judicial condemnation sets a relevant precedent for analyzing similar cases, especially those involving gender-based violence in the political arena.

The expectation is that the public retraction, if fulfilled, will serve as a mechanism of symbolic reparation, even as the debate on the topic remains open in society.

The case also reflects a moment of increased scrutiny over the behavior of public figures on social media, where the line between political criticism and personal offense often becomes blurred.

The decision by the Federal District Court, by imposing financial sanctions and requiring a public retraction, signals an attempt to balance freedom of expression with the protection of individuals’ honor and image, especially in a scenario where misogynistic attacks have become recurrent in national political discourse.
