Iran Threatens to Break Ceasefire Following Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

Iran has threatened to break the ceasefire and retaliate against Israel in response to successive bombings carried out against Lebanon on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Iranian government sources informed the Persian country’s news agencies that Tehran is considering resuming attacks due to Israel’s breach of the agreement.

“Iran may launch a large-scale defensive offensive at any moment, as the Israeli regime resorts to violating a fragile and temporary ceasefire,” warned a senior security official, according to Iranian state media Press TV.

The senior official urged mediating countries to intervene. Iran demands that the ceasefire encompass all battlefronts, including Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, which have been targets of Israeli bombings over the last 40 days of war in the Middle East.

On social media, the spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, Ebrahim Rezaei, advocated for the suspension of the ceasefire and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

“In response to the Zionists’ savage invasion of Lebanon, ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz should be halted immediately. The Lebanese have given their lives for us, and we must not leave them alone for even a moment. Ceasefire on all fronts or none,” he stated.

In a statement released by Iranian media, the country’s Armed Forces announced they would maintain “intelligent” control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes, without specifying how this control would be implemented.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks was one of the conditions for the ceasefire between the United States (US) and Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he supports the agreement brokered between the US and Iran but added that Lebanon would be excluded from the ceasefire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported bombing 100 targets in ten minutes in southern Lebanon and Beirut.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that Wednesday’s attacks (April 8, 2026) resulted in “dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries,” according to preliminary counts.

Videos of destroyed buildings in the center of the Lebanese capital are circulating in the neighboring country’s media. Hezbollah has urged residents displaced by the war not to return to their homes until a ceasefire is officially declared in Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam lamented the Israeli attacks on residential and densely populated neighborhoods.

“[Israel does not care] about all regional and international efforts to stop the war, despite total disregard for the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, which it has never truly respected,” he wrote on social media.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who mediated the fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US, stated that the violation of the agreement jeopardizes the peace process.

“I sincerely and earnestly appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and respect the two-week ceasefire as agreed, so that diplomacy can take a leading role towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” he stated in a message on social media.

As of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health estimated that the current phase of the conflict, which began on March 2, 2026, had killed more than 1,500 people and injured another 4,800.

Israel also bombed 93 Lebanese health units, and 57 healthcare professionals were killed. More than 1 million people have been displaced from their homes during this period.
