Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced his country’s intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine. The recognition is set to take place in September 2025, during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This decision follows a pledge by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to reform the governance system, including a general election in 2026 without the participation of Hamas, and the demilitarization of the Palestinian state.

Carney also called for Hamas to release all remaining hostages and was critical of Israel for the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The announcement comes after similar expressions of intent from France and the United Kingdom, and has been met with criticism from Israel.
