President Jacob Zuma attends BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Summit, 14 Apr 2011

According to Celso Amorim, a special advisor to President Lula, the BRICS alliance represents the “new expression of multilateralism” and a viable alternative to the global order historically dominated by the G7. Amorim argues that BRICS serves as a platform to build a more just, inclusive, and representative global system. He views the G7 as an “exclusive club” that makes decisions in an oligarchic manner, contributing to the decline of traditional multilateralism.

The article highlights that the BRICS bloc, which began as an economic acronym, has evolved into a political forum with a proactive agenda. Amorim sees the 2023 expansion of the bloc as a key factor in ensuring a balance between representativeness and efficiency. He also points to concrete achievements, such as the creation of the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2014, and progress on issues like trade in local currencies and artificial intelligence. For the diplomat, BRICS is not a rival to the G7 but a force for inclusion and reform, aligning with the Brazilian government’s foreign policy of seeking more democratic international governance.
