A significant development has emerged in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, as the Palestinian armed group Hamas has reportedly agreed to a new 60-day ceasefire proposal. The deal, brokered by regional mediators, aims to halt hostilities and facilitate a crucial exchange of hostages and prisoners.

According to a Palestinian official close to the negotiations, the multi-stage plan, put forth by Egypt and Qatar and based on a U.S. framework, would see Hamas release some of the remaining Israeli hostages in phases during the temporary truce. In exchange, Israel would release a number of Palestinian prisoners. The agreement would also allow a significant increase in the flow of humanitarian aid into the war-torn territory, addressing a severe humanitarian crisis.

The proposed deal has been met with cautious optimism, though Israeli officials have yet to provide a formal response. While the agreement represents a potential path to de-escalation, questions remain about the long-term prospects for a permanent ceasefire and a full Israeli withdrawal, which have been key demands from Hamas.
