After days of embarrassing silence about the images that came out of Tianjin, Donald Trump finally reacted. And, no surprise, in the worst way possible: with more attacks and attempts to humiliate India. The photos of Narendra Modi warmly embracing Vladimir Putin and casually conversing with Xi Jinping were a direct challenge to American bullying. Instead of a civilized diplomatic response, Trump chose the path of aggression. He published his attacks on Truth Social, his personal network, completely disregarding traditional diplomatic channels. The message was republished by Vice President JD Vance, turning a personal outburst into an official position of the American administration.

In the message published on September 1st — exactly the day of the SCO summit — Trump unloaded his frustration against India. Here is the full text:
“What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do tremendous business with us. In other words, they sell us massive amounts of goods, we are their biggest ‘customer’, but we sell very little to them – So far a completely one-sided relationship, and it has been this way for many decades. The reason is that India has charged us, until now, such high tariffs, the highest of any country, that our businesses are unable to sell in India. It has been a totally one-sided disaster! In addition, India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the US. They have now offered to cut their tariffs to zero, but it is getting late. They should have done this years ago. Just some simple facts for people to ponder!!!”
The tone is one of pure blackmail, as if India were a colony that owes obedience to Washington.

Trump blatantly lies about the reality of bilateral trade. India is the fifth-largest trading partner of the United States, with an exchange that exceeded $190 billion in 2024. Far from being “one-sided,” this relationship massively benefits the American economy. The United States exports high value-added products to India: technology, medical equipment, aircraft, chemicals, and industrial machinery. Boeing alone has sold hundreds of aircraft to Indian companies, generating billions in revenue and thousands of jobs in the US.
American companies earn trillions through their operations in India. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and Meta get gigantic revenues from the Indian market. Silicon Valley runs on Indian brains—more than 40% of the CEOs of the top 500 American companies are of Indian origin. India buys $18 billion in American armaments annually. But that doesn’t count in Trump’s distorted math.
Regarding tariffs, American hypocrisy is blatant. The United States maintains tariffs of up to 350% on textile products and barriers that block products from dozens of countries. Trump himself imposed 50% tariffs on Indian products. India has 1.4 billion people and the sovereign right to protect its economy. Trump should negotiate instead of whining on social media.

While Modi was hugging Putin and talking to Xi Jinping in Tianjin, Trump behaved like an old grump complaining alone on his personal Orkut. The behind-the-scenes reality is revealing: Putin wanted to travel together with Modi, waited 10 minutes for him, and they both spent 45 minutes talking in the car even after they reached their destination. Real diplomacy versus virtual blackmail.
Putin was surrounded by dozens of heads of state, met with Erdogan of NATO, and participated in the largest geopolitical summit of the year. Trump remained isolated, attacking countries that should be partners.

Trump’s reaction to the Tianjin images exposed American impotence in the face of the new geopolitical reality. His empty threats and desperate attacks on social media only confirmed the obvious: Washington has lost the ability to dictate the rules of the global game. Meanwhile, Modi continues to build bridges that connect the future, leaving Trump to talk to himself.
