Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to meet with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. The meeting marks an early diplomatic engagement for the new Pontiff, who was elected in May 2025 and is the 267th Bishop of Rome . The discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover issues of mutual concern, potentially including social justice, inequality, and environmental protection.

The new Pope, whose secular name is Robert Francis Prevost, has begun his papacy by emphasizing themes of peace and fraternity. In his first message for World Youth Day, he encouraged young people to become “courageous witnesses of Christ” and “builders of peace in society,” overcoming selfishness to become “active artisans of peace” . This alignment with social themes often championed by Lula provides a solid foundation for their dialogue.

This visit continues the tradition of Lula’s engagement with the Holy See. The outcome of their meeting will be closely watched for its potential influence on both the Catholic world’s approach to global issues and Brazil’s domestic and foreign policy directions.
