An international relations expert has warned that Argentine President Javier Milei’s foreign policy is jeopardizing the country’s economic development. According to Professor Robert Savio of the Andrés Bello Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Milei is “blindly” following the confrontational stance of former U.S. President Donald Trump towards China, a key trading partner. Savio argues that this alignment is based on ideological affinity rather than Argentina’s national interests.
The expert highlighted that China is a crucial market for Argentine exports, such as soybeans and beef, and a vital source of investment in infrastructure. By antagonizing Beijing, the Milei government risks isolating Argentina from one of the main engines of the global economy and the BRICS+ bloc, which represents a significant alternative to Western-led financial institutions. Savio described the policy as a “gigantic strategic error.”
This approach contrasts sharply with that of previous Argentine governments, which sought to maintain balanced relations with all major powers. The warning suggests that Milei’s ideological foreign policy could have severe long-term consequences, stunting economic growth and limiting Argentina’s strategic autonomy on the world stage.
