In a major geopolitical shift, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have signaled they are on the verge of integrating into the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). This move follows what have been described as “positive” and “advanced” negotiations between SDF commanders and the government in Damascus, facilitated by Russia.

A full integration would mark the effective end of the SDF as a separate, U.S.-aligned force in northeastern Syria and would represent a significant victory for the Damascus government. It would lead to the reunification of most of the country’s territory under the control of the Syrian state for the first time in over a decade.

The potential deal poses a direct challenge to the ongoing presence of U.S. troops in Syria, who are deployed in areas controlled by the SDF. If the SDF merges with the state army, the legal and operational basis for the American military mission in the region would be severely undermined.
