In a significant foreign policy shift, the Venezuelan government has announced it will close several of its embassies in Western countries and simultaneously open new diplomatic missions in Africa. The move, directed by President Nicolás Maduro, is part of a broader strategy to reorient the country’s international alliances. According to the government, this decision is based on a “principle of efficiency and budgetary rationality” and aims to strengthen South-South cooperation.

The administrative decree authorizing the change specifies that the closures and openings will be carried out in a coordinated manner. The government statement positioned the shift as a move to deepen ties with “friendly nations” and build a “more balanced, fair, and multipolar world order.” This realignment signals a deliberate pivot away from traditional diplomatic partners in the West toward forging stronger relationships with African nations.
