“A Democrat is gonna be elected in 2028. You know that, I know that. It’s gonna be a Democratic House, it’s gonna be a Democratic Senate.”
This categorical prediction comes from veteran strategist James Carville, who became world-famous for the warning he gave Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign: “It’s the economy, stupid.” The statement, made on the “Politics War Room” podcast on November 7th, reflects the shockwave sent through political expectations by Donald Trump’s recent defeats in various local elections across the United States.
Carville went further, detailing what he believes will be the first act of a future Democratic administration: a profound reform of the Supreme Court, expanding the number of justices from nine to thirteen. “That’s gonna happen, people,” he asserted, justifying the measure as an “intervention” to restore the American people’s “trust” in the highest court. Confidently, he concluded: “And I would bet a lot of money that that’s what’s gonna happen.”
According to Carville, the Republican Party’s base is already demoralized, and Democratic financial power will secure the victory. “A Democrat has not lost an election in this century for a lack of money. And they’re not going to lose the next one for a lack of money,” he stated, predicting a surge in donations. “They [donors and lobbyists] hear the hoofprints now and they’re going, ‘Oh, shit, what did we do?’”
For Brazil, the consequences of this shift in expectations are already becoming apparent. The political sectors that bet everything on a relationship with Donald Trump, even orchestrating sanctions and tariffs, will find it difficult to establish a dialogue with the Democratic Party. The reverse is also true: sectors in Brazil that maintained an independent stance will find a much more receptive White House starting in 2029.
Brazil’s political and business sectors must start preparing for this new phase. The excessive bet that Bolsonarismo placed on Trump is failing, which naturally benefits President Lula. If re-elected in 2026, Lula will govern until 2030, coinciding with the first two years of an American government completely dominated by the Democrats. This alignment could open up significant investment opportunities and enhance trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
