The Chinese Navy has reached a significant milestone in its military modernization with the official commissioning of its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian. The vessel, which joins the Liaoning and the Shandong, was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by President Xi Jinping and was highlighted as a solid step toward building a world-class naval force. The Fujian is notable for being the first Chinese carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult system (EMALS), an advanced technology that elevates the fleet’s operational capability.

Beijing views this expansion as crucial for safeguarding the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. A spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Chen Binhua, stated that an increasingly powerful Navy “will more effectively protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, thwarting any attempts to encroach upon or divide China’s sacred territory.” This positioning comes amidst rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait situation.

The entry of the Fujian into service marks, according to authorities, the beginning of China’s “three aircraft carrier era,” signaling an acceleration in national defense development. This military strengthening is viewed as a direct response to geopolitical issues, enabling China to reinforce security and naval presence in international and regional waters.
