The operations involving the deployment of military units in cities across the United States, ordered by the administration of President Donald Trump, have resulted in an estimated cost of nearly $500 million. According to reports based on expert estimations and published by The Intercept, the total price tag for the operation reached $473 million, reflecting a massive expenditure on internal security actions.
The cost was spread across various operations carried out amid a backdrop of protests and what the White House termed a “public safety emergency.” Among the largest expenses were the operations in Washington, totaling around $270 million in August, and the deployment of troops to Los Angeles in June, which cost $172 million. Other cities like Portland, Memphis, and Chicago also saw detachments, with costs running into the millions of dollars.
The mobilization involved the National Guard and even Marines, with the stated objective of “restoring order” in urban centers experiencing high crime rates or facing large demonstrations. The outlay of nearly half a billion dollars adds to the general increase in military spending approved under the Trump administration, highlighting the administration’s focus on augmenting the presence of federal forces to contain domestic unrest.
