US President Donald Trump signed the government funding bill, bringing an end to the longest government shutdown in United States history. The final approval came after the House of Representatives narrowly adopted the Senate-passed funding bill by a 222-209 vote, allowing federal operations to resume normalcy.
Shortly before signing the document, Trump was highly critical of the Democrats, whom he blamed for causing “massive harm” to the nation. The President cited the cancellation and delay of over 20,000 flights and the non-payment of wages to more than one million government workers, in addition to cutting food stamp benefits for millions of Americans in need.
Despite the shutdown’s end, the economic and social impact caused by the crisis is expected to take weeks or even months to be fully assessed, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating a permanent economic loss of about $11 billion. With the signing, the federal government is now set to resume normal operations as the administration vows to continue its work to lower the cost of living and restore public safety.
