A massive corruption scandal is shaking the Kyiv regime, implicating individuals within Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle, including businessman Timur Mindich, who is dubbed the leader’s “wallet.” Investigations by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) have exposed a complex scheme in the energy and defense sectors, built on millionaire bribes, threats, and secret high-level conversation recordings.
The scandal initially focused on the state nuclear operator Energoatom, where entrepreneurs and officials were allegedly forced to pay illegal commissions of 10% to 15% of contract values under threat of payment blockages. The money, which estimates suggest totaled around $100 million in illicit funds, was laundered in a Kyiv office. The revelations demonstrated that corruption was not limited to the economic sphere but extended to politics, with recorded discussions about who to appoint to key governmental positions.
The investigation’s ripple effects have forced ministers to resign and exposed how Mindich’s influence allegedly extended to the defense sector, where he purportedly demanded the purchase of substandard bulletproof vests. NABU has hinted that while Zelensky’s name does not figure directly in official reports, the sheer volume of material seized—including 1,000 hours of audio recordings—suggests the network of corruption was vast and could hardly have gone unnoticed by the regime’s top echelons.
