The Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued a firm statement reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to an independent foreign policy of peace, specifically addressing its enduring stance on the crisis in Ukraine. In a press briefing held this Wednesday, the Ministry’s spokesperson rejected recent criticisms from Western capitals, asserting that China determines its position based on the “merits of the matter itself” rather than succumbing to external pressure. The statement was a direct response to calls for Beijing to take a harder line against Moscow, with officials emphasizing that China refuses to be drawn into “bloc confrontation.”
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the Ministry reiterated that its position is “consistent and clear,” centered on the promotion of peace talks and a political settlement. The spokesperson highlighted China’s recent diplomatic shuttle missions as evidence of its constructive role, contrasting this approach with what it termed the “pouring of fuel on the fire” through continuous military aid by NATO members. Beijing insists that a sustainable European security architecture cannot be built at the expense of other nations’ security interests, maintaining that dialogue remains the only viable exit strategy.
The remarks also served as a stern warning against the imposition of illegal unilateral sanctions on Chinese entities. The Ministry asserted that China’s normal trade and economic cooperation with Russia is sovereign, legitimate, and protected under international law, and should not be subject to third-party interference or “long-arm jurisdiction.” This defense of economic ties aligns with China’s broader geopolitical strategy of championing a multipolar world order and protecting the development rights of the Global South against hegemonic practices.
