Maricá Sets Benchmark for Public Safety in Rio

City Achieves Unprecedented Safety Levels, Reduces Violence, and Aims to Become One of the Safest in the Country

Maricá reports the lowest vehicle theft rate in the Metropolitan Region, according to data from the Public Security Institute. This result consolidates a significant drop in violence indicators and reinforces the progress of security policies in the municipality. The Maricá City Hall, through the Citizen Security Secretariat, reported that in the first quarter of 2026, the city achieved the lowest vehicle theft rate among municipalities in the Metropolitan Region with over 100,000 inhabitants. This performance marks a new benchmark in local indicators.

Moreover, the municipality reached the lowest violent lethality rate in the last 24 years. Another relevant data point is that Maricá has gone two years without records of robbery followed by death and cargo theft, highlighting a consistent trend of crime reduction.

The figures were released by the Public Security Institute and show continuous progress in the public security actions implemented in the city over recent years.

“We are preparing the City of Security, arming the Municipal Guard, and advancing the construction of the Military Police battalion. With this, we organize the security forces so that Maricá becomes the safest municipality in the country,” emphasized Mayor Washington Quaquá.

Progress is also evident in long-term analyses. Between 2018 and 2026, Maricá reduced street robbery and violent lethality rates by over 70%. In the same period, vehicle thefts dropped by more than 80%.

According to the Citizen Security Secretariat, these results are a direct reflection of structural and strategic investments aimed at preventing and combating violence.

The Secretary of Citizen Security, Colonel Julio Veras, highlighted that the actions have a direct impact on the population’s quality of life.

“Maricá has been increasing investments in technology, infrastructure, and artificial intelligence to reduce violence rates. We will continue training and specializing agents, as well as strengthening integration with the Military and Civil Police,” he added.

Among the main initiatives is the advancement of the City of Security project. The project envisions creating a modern complex to centralize operations and enhance the response capacity of security forces.

The space will feature a training area, shooting range, environments for agent training, and a new Integrated Command and Control Center, equipped with smart cameras and real-time monitoring.

The proposal is to integrate technology and operational action, allowing greater efficiency in crime prevention and confrontation.

Another important point is the partnership with the State Government, which resulted in the announcement of the construction of the 13th Military Police Battalion in 2026.

The new unit will be installed within the City of Security, further strengthening the presence of police forces in the municipality and expanding the protection structure for the population.
