Washington D.C./Brasília, July 9, 2025 – In a move set to intensify trade tensions between the United States and Brazil, US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of 50% tariffs on all Brazilian products entering the American market.1 The new taxation will take effect starting August 1, 2025.2

The decision is part of a series of tariff actions taken by the Trump administration, which justified the 50% tariff as “far short of what is needed to ensure a level playing field” between the two nations, citing an “unfair trade relationship.”3

In addition to the specific taxation on Brazil, Trump also signaled a tougher stance against the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).4 Products originating from any member nation of the bloc will face an additional 10% tariff. The US president expressed his belief that the BRICS group was created to “destroy” and eventually replace the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

Trump’s threat has already drawn strong reactions from BRICS leaders.5 Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized Trump’s “irresponsible” online threats, while former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev interpreted Trump’s declaration as an acknowledgment of BRICS’ growing global authority.6

The measure represents a new challenge for diplomatic and economic relations between Brazil and the United States, with potential significant impacts on bilateral trade and global supply chains.7
