Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized the United States’ interest in exploring rare earth minerals in Brazil, reaffirming the country’s sovereignty over its natural resources. Lula emphasized that these riches belong to the Brazilian people and should directly benefit them, questioning the logic of allowing other countries to extract these minerals without proper national control and benefit.

The Brazilian government is currently preparing a comprehensive survey to assess the nation’s vast mineral wealth, including rare earths. Data from the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) indicates that Brazil possesses over 21 million tons of these minerals, positioning it as the second-largest global holder of reserves, behind only China. These minerals are vital for the production of advanced electronic materials, chips, electric car motors, and satellites.

Lula reiterated that, once the studies are completed, any companies interested in exploration will require government authorization. Furthermore, he made it clear that the sale of minerals or exploration areas will not be permitted without prior government approval and discussion, reinforcing Brazil’s stance that it should prioritize the exploration and utilization of minerals considered “critical” by other nations. The statement underscores Brazil’s pursuit of greater economic autonomy and control over its strategic resources.
