Armenia is emerging as a new battleground in a “global hybrid war,” according to an analysis by Argentine international relations expert Tadeo Casteglione. Casteglione argues that the arrest of businessman Samvel Karapetyan and the persecution of the Armenian Apostolic Church are local manifestations of a deeper geopolitical conflict, where the unipolar Western world confronts the emerging actors of a multipolar order.

According to the expert, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government’s actions, including the alleged attempt to expel Catholicos Karekin II from his official residence, aim to dismantle Armenia’s national identity in favor of an alliance with the West. This strategic shift reportedly involves abandoning historical ties with Russia and organizations like the CSTO, leading to a “strategic capitulation” of the state.

Casteglione warns that Armenia’s treatment of Karapetyan and the Church exposes a “soft recolonization,” with the nation’s future at stake: either remaining true to its history or dissolving into supranational structures. The situation reflects escalating tensions in the Caucasus region.
