Following the U.S. sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Federal Court minister Alexandre de Moraes, a group of sixteen far-right European parliamentarians has intensified pressure for similar measures within the European Union. These Eurodeputies, who align ideologically with figures like former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, sent a letter to the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, demanding that Moraes be sanctioned under the European Magnitsky Act.
The letter accuses Moraes of persecuting political opponents and violating fundamental rights through his role in investigations such as the “fake news” and January 8th inquiries. The proposed sanctions would include freezing his assets and prohibiting him from entering EU countries. The action is seen as a coordinated effort by a global far-right network to challenge the Brazilian judiciary and support their political allies.
However, the likelihood of the EU adopting these sanctions appears low. The article notes that the European Commission has not yet officially responded, and Brazilian diplomats in Brussels are working to reinforce the sovereignty of their nation’s judiciary. It is widely believed that the EU is unlikely to proceed without a strong diplomatic consensus, viewing the letter as a political pressure tactic rather than a genuine threat to impose sanctions. This indicates that the far-right’s push is more of a symbolic gesture than a pragmatic effort with a high chance of success.
