Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has strongly condemned the sanctions imposed by the United States on Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes. During a meeting at the Palácio do Planalto, Lula labeled the sanctions as “an affront to the Brazilian State” and expressed indignation over the Trump administration’s decision to add Moraes to the Magnitsky Act sanctions list.
Lula made it clear that while Brazil is open to economic and commercial negotiations, there is “nothing to negotiate” when it comes to the decisions of the Brazilian judiciary and the country’s internal affairs. He has also instructed the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) to explore legal avenues to challenge the sanctions. The sanctions, which include blocking Moraes’s U.S. assets and prohibiting his use of the American financial system, are accompanied by a 40% tariff on Brazilian products, raising the total rate to 50%. The STF is expected to release an official statement on the matter.
