Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “losing reason and humanity” in his handling of the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. The minister made the comments in an interview, where he described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “unacceptable” and “a pure denial of the law and the founding values of our civilization.” He added that fighting against terrorism should no longer be used as an excuse for the scale of the operations.
Crosetto suggested that Italy should consider imposing sanctions as a way to pressure Netanyahu, clarifying that such a move would be intended to “save” the Israeli people from their government. He also drew a comparison between the methods of Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting they have become “dangerously similar.” Despite his strong condemnation, Crosetto defended Italy’s decision not to officially recognize a Palestinian state.
