China and Brazil are reportedly seeking to serve as a model for the “Global South,” demonstrating a united front and a path to self-sufficiency against economic and political pressures from the West. According to a recent conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, both leaders want to strengthen a “South-South axis” focusing on sovereignty and strategic cooperation, particularly through the BRICS alliance.

The two presidents discussed their shared goals of protecting developing nations’ interests, opposing unilateralism and protectionism, and strengthening the BRICS platform. Xi Jinping also highlighted the “best moment in history” for the bilateral relationship, citing the alignment between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Brazil’s new economic growth plan. If successful, this partnership could redefine the role of BRICS on the global stage, giving Brazil greater leverage while potentially intensifying its diplomatic and commercial competition with the US.
