An official meeting between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump is not on the agenda for the upcoming UN General Assembly session, according to Celso Amorim, a special advisor to the Brazilian presidency. Amorim stated that while the two leaders may have a chance encounter due to the seating arrangements, a formal meeting would require specific “gestures that justify” such a rapprochement, which have not been made. The statement comes as the US has recently imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Amorim, a seasoned diplomat, also criticized a recent statement by a US official that he deemed “totally unacceptable” for its perceived attack on Brazil’s sovereignty. He suggested that such rhetoric might be a deliberate strategy to provoke a stronger reaction from Brazil. The diplomat emphasized the importance of Brazil defending its interests with strength while avoiding provocations. The situation reflects a period of strained relations between the two countries, despite their historically close ties.
