The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is holding a historic summit in Tianjin, China, bringing together more than 20 world leaders to discuss security, economic, and political cooperation. Hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the gathering is viewed as a major show of solidarity among the Global South, with key leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. The summit aims to showcase an alternative to the Western-led international order and to deepen coordination on critical geopolitical issues.

Despite its growing size and convening power, the SCO’s ability to address substantial security issues has been described as limited due to ongoing frictions among member states, particularly between India and Pakistan. Nevertheless, the summit provides a crucial platform for narrative projection and for advancing a shared vision for the bloc’s next decade of development. The meeting is expected to result in a declaration and a new development strategy, with a focus on strengthening cooperation and promoting a more multilateral world.
