Brazilian activist and federal deputy Thiago Avila has given a harrowing account of his detention by the Israeli military following the seizure of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Avila stated that the activists were subjected to torture and degrading treatment, with the clear intention, in his words, “to kill us.” He described being held incommunicado, beaten, and threatened with death.
In response to the conditions of their detention, Avila and other activists initiated a hunger strike. He credits this act of collective resistance, along with significant international pressure, for ultimately securing their release. The activist framed the ordeal as part of a broader strategy to intimidate and silence solidarity movements with the Palestinian people.
His testimony has drawn condemnation from human rights groups and lawmakers, who are calling for independent investigations into the conduct of the Israeli forces. The incident has further highlighted the risks faced by international activists attempting to break the blockade of Gaza.
