Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Montevideo and other Uruguayan cities, demanding the government immediately sever diplomatic relations with Israel. The massive demonstrations, organized by a broad coalition of social, union, and student movements, reflect growing public outrage over the ongoing situation in Gaza and what participants describe as “genocide.”

Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners with slogans such as “Break with the genocidal state.” The scale of the marches places significant pressure on the government of President Luis Lacalle Pou, which has so far maintained a position of condemning the violence while stopping short of a full diplomatic break. The public sentiment, however, appears to be shifting decisively in favor of a more forceful stance.

The protests in Uruguay are part of a larger wave of solidarity movements across Latin America. The demonstrations show that international public opinion continues to galvanize, demanding concrete political actions from their governments against Israel.
