Beijing has vowed a “comprehensive and resolute” response after the United States announced a new wave of tariffs targeting $100 billion worth of Chinese goods, including a 100% levy on electric vehicles. Chinese officials stated they have “plenty of ways to hit back” at the US measures, with potential countermeasures expected to target key American exports such as agricultural products like soybeans, corn, and wheat, as well as commercial aircraft.

The escalation marks a significant worsening of the US-China trade war. Analysts warn that China’s retaliation will be carefully calibrated to maximize political and economic impact within the United States, potentially targeting sectors and regions that are politically sensitive. The move threatens to disrupt global supply chains further and stoke inflation in both economies.
