Angola celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from Portugal with a massive civic and military parade in Luanda’s Republic Square. The celebrations were presided over by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, with the participation of 10,000 people and 45 foreign delegations, highlighting national culture and the country’s achievements over half a century.
The date served to pay special tribute to the proclamation leader and first president, António Agostinho Neto, with a floral offering at his mausoleum. The ceremony also included the awarding of a special commemorative medal, in its Honor Class, to those who have led the nation’s destiny since the proclamation of the Republic on November 11, 1975.
The central theme of the event was the exaltation of peace, considered the greatest achievement in 50 years of history. Although independence was achieved under cannon fire due to disagreements between the liberation movements and invasion attempts, definitive peace was only attained on April 4, 2002, after years of civil war. The country also used the anniversary to honor thousands of citizens and foreign personalities who fought for liberation and contributed to national development.
