Colombian President Gustavo Petro has escalated his rhetoric against President Donald Trump and Senator Marco Rubio, whom he called “liars” for using drug trafficking as a pretext for attacks that resulted in deaths in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. Petro firmly condemned the US attacks on alleged drug boats, insisting, “You are not killing drug traffickers,” but rather targeting people who were not subject to the death penalty.
Petro cited the case of Alejandro Carranza, a fisherman who, according to the Colombian leader, was killed in a bombed boat. The South American president argued that regardless of what the fisherman was transporting—”fish” or “cocaine”—there was no legal justification for his execution. He criticized Washington’s stance, which attempts to dictate Colombia’s anti-drug policy.
The Colombian leader further alleged that the actual drug traffickers are using American politicians, such as “Mr. Rubio’s senators,” to call for bombings in Colombia and attempt to destabilize the democratically elected government. Petro concluded his response with an emphatic declaration, asserting that “Colombia will not be humiliated” by the tactics and accusations of the American political establishment.
