On Wednesday (14), US President Donald Trump and the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, spoke by telephone and posted brief accounts of the conversation on their social networks.

Delcy took over the presidency on an interim basis earlier this month after the US Army captured President Nicolás Maduro and took him to the United States. The two leaders described the conversation as positive.

“We addressed a bilateral work agenda for the benefit of our peoples, as well as pending issues in the relationship between our governments,” said Delcy.

In a post on social media, Trump said that the two discussed issues such as oil, minerals, trade and security and said that the United States is helping the Latin American country to “recover”.

“This partnership between the United States and Venezuela will be spectacular for everyone. Venezuela will soon be great and prosperous again, perhaps more so than ever before,” said the US president.

The call points to a change in relations between the two countries. On the 3rd, President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores were taken away by US military personnel, on orders from Donald Trump’s administration, and are being held in New York.

In a statement to the nation after Maduro’s capture, Delcy Rodríguez criticized the action and said that Venezuela would not return to being a colony. But last week, the Venezuelan government announced that it would resume diplomatic talks with the US.
