Moscow has issued a sharp condemnation of fresh missile strikes on Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declaring on Saturday that the attacks constitute an irreparable blow to the non-proliferation credibility of those responsible for launching them.
“We are increasingly alarmed by reports of new missile strikes on the Bushehr NPP on April 4. We are studying the incoming information on this matter. We strongly condemn this atrocity, which has led to human casualties,” Zakharova stated in remarks attributed to her by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The strikes, which the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) confirmed were carried out jointly by the United States and Israel, resulted in the death of at least one plant employee. The Bushehr facility operates under full International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, a fact that Moscow underscored in its denunciation of the assault.
Zakharova described the targeting of IAEA-monitored nuclear infrastructure as “an indelible stain on the reputation of those launching the missiles,” and called upon all parties to immediately cease strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in order to “prevent the worst.” She further warned that the situation at the Bushehr plant is “increasingly approaching a dangerous point,” stressing that Russia is actively working to alert the international community and global public to the gravity of the escalation.
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement arrives amid mounting concern over the broader strategic implications of attacking civilian nuclear infrastructure. Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, which constructed and has long maintained the Bushehr facility, separately warned that nuclear risk is rising daily as a result of the ongoing strikes.
