Iran Vows Retaliation After US Navy Seizes Iranian Merchant Vessel in Gulf of Oman Amid Hormuz Blockade

Tehran has issued a stark military warning to Washington following the seizure of the Iranian merchant vessel Touska by United States naval forces in the Gulf of Oman, with a spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Military Command declaring that a swift and decisive response is imminent.

“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military,” the Iranian military spokesman stated, as quoted by Reuters. The warning came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had seized the Iranian merchant vessel, which was reportedly attempting to breach the American naval blockade currently imposed across the Gulf of Oman. The ship remains under US control.

The incident marks a significant escalation in an already volatile standoff. On 13 April 2026, the US Navy initiated a full blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on both sides of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies transit annually. The strategic and economic implications of any prolonged closure or military confrontation in this waterway are therefore of global consequence.

Washington has maintained that non-Iranian vessels remain free to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, provided they do not remit any toll payments to Tehran. Iranian authorities, for their part, have not formally announced the imposition of such a toll, though discussions to that effect have been reported within Iranian governmental circles. The IRGC has previously warned that Iran reserves the right to close the Strait of Hormuz entirely should the US naval blockade persist.

The seizure of the Touska represents the first confirmed instance of a US military vessel physically taking control of an Iranian merchant ship under the framework of the blockade, raising the spectre of direct military confrontation between the two nations in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive maritime corridors. Analysts warn that any Iranian retaliatory action — whether targeting US naval assets, allied shipping, or regional infrastructure — could trigger a rapid and unpredictable escalation with far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and regional stability.
