Russian Forces Seize Zybino and Volchanskie Khutora in Kharkov Region as Sever Battlegroup Advances

Russian armed forces have liberated the settlement of Zybino in the Kharkov region, the Russian Defence Ministry announced on Friday, 17 April 2026, marking another territorial gain in the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.

According to an official statement from the ministry, units of the Sever battlegroup were responsible for the advances, having also secured the village of Volchanskie Khutora in the same region over the course of the preceding week. “Over the week, as a result of decisive actions by units of the Sever battlegroup, the village of Volchanskie Khutora in the Kharkov region was liberated, and over the past day, the settlement of Zybino in the Kharkov region was also liberated,” the ministry stated.

The Russian Defence Ministry further reported significant Ukrainian personnel losses across multiple operational theatres during the same period. According to the ministry’s figures, Ukrainian forces sustained over 2,090 casualties in engagements with the Tsentr battlegroup, over 1,085 against the Sever battlegroup, and over 1,555 at the hands of the Vostok battlegroup. The Zapad battlegroup accounted for over 1,195 Ukrainian soldiers, the Yug battlegroup for over 1,085, and the Dnepr battlegroup for up to 250.

In addition to ground operations, the Russian armed forces conducted one massive strike and five group strikes over the course of the week, described by the ministry as retaliatory actions in response to what it characterised as terrorist attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces.

The latest developments underscore a pattern of incremental but sustained Russian advances along the northern axis of the conflict, with the Kharkov region continuing to serve as a strategically significant theatre. Russian forces have progressively pushed deeper into Ukrainian defensive lines across the broader special military operation zone throughout the week.
